This chapter presents a novel approach to compute ambient occlusion for direct DVR. We demonstrate that, by considering the ambient-occlusion computation as a filtering process, we can significantly improve efficiency and make it usable in a real-time DVR application. Such an approach is useful for medical visualization applications were transfer functions are very often subject to change.
