Adaptive Instrument-based Shoulder Replacement

Description

The success rate of total shoulder replacement operations is significantly smaller than for instance total knee or total hip replacement operations. Loosening due to malpositioning of prosthetic implants has a big impact on the rate of success. Especially the cup (glenoid) component suffers from this. Guidance systems have been used for TSA, but they interfere with daily clinical practice. For this reason we are developing unobtrusive, patient specific, user (surgeon) configurable guidance devices. The exact configuration (adjustment) of the guidance device(s) will be derived from computer based pre-operative planning tools in which the surgeon can inspect the patients anatomy and simulate/evaluate surgical alternatives. We hope to achieve more accurate placement of prosthetics (in general), leading to more successful results.
