DelftVis Starter Kit
Welcome to the DVSK (yes, we were inspired by the PVSK)!
The DVSK contains important information, that you, a starting PhD or MSc candidate in the Delft Visualisation Group, should study.
Papers that you must read
These papers form the important literature basis that you will need as a visualisation researcher. Study these before starting with your M.Sc. or Ph.D. research. Study them again later.
T. Munzner, Visualization, Fundamentals of Computer Graphics, P. Shirley and S. Marschner, AK Peters, 2009, pp. 675-707. PDF fulltext.
B. Laramee, How to Read a Visualization Research Paper: Extracting the Essentials, in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (IEEE CG&A), forthcoming. PDF fulltext.
T. Munzner, A Nested Process Model for Visualization Design and Validation, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, vol. 15, 2009. PDF fulltext.
B. Laramee, How To Write A Visualization Research Paper: A Starting Point, Computer Graphics Forum (CGF). PDF fulltext.
T. Munzner, Process and Pitfalls in Writing Information Visualization Research Papers, Lecture Notes In Computer Science, 2008. PDF fulltext.
Scientific writing tips
My Ph.D. advisor rewrote himself in bash: Even if you don't use bash, the advice on these pages concerning scientific / technical writing should be taken to heart.
Active vs. Passive voice: Good arguments for using the active voice in scientific writing.
In your report, make use of the delftvisthese bibliography style (e.g. [De Haan 04]) as follows:
% unpack the delftvisthese.zip file in the directory containing your tex file
\bibliographystyle{delftvisthese}
\bibliography{your_bibfile_name}
Meeting protocol
We also make use of Dr. Laramee's PVSK meeting protocol! Each meeting should be documented with a flat text file according to the example below. Complete the "progress" section before the meeting and bring it with you. Complete the rest of minutes ASAP after the meeting and send it to all participants.
Minutes of Meeting: Bob, Malim, Andy ------------------------------------ date: 16 Oct ’06 start time: 13:30 end time: 15:00 date and time of next meeting: 23 Oct ’06, 13:30 topics discussed: -- structure of initial 3rd year project document -- presentation of 3rd year project -- timeline of 3rd year project progress since last meeting: -- Bob: 3rd project plan refined -- Malim: initial document started -- Andy: entry clearance to linux lab authorized TODO (for next meeting): -- Malim: place a copy of the minutes on the CS web server in a folder called ‘‘minutes’’(w/in 3 hrs) -- Malim: work on title page title page: title, author, current date -- Malim: include table of contents
